UBank today announced a key milestone in its commitment to digital inclusivity with the introduction of its Open Source Accessibility Kit

Available globally, this is the first publicly available tool of its kind to help all contributors of an iOS app create an app experience that is accessible for all.

While there are accessibility options available on the market, there is currently no single tool that meets the needs of all iOS app contributors, spanning developers, designers, testers and product owners, given their limitations in scope, functionality and usability.

UBank’s Kit empowers all contributors, not just app developers, to create an app that is accessible to all.

For example, an app designer can immediately check if their creative graphics can be understood by all audiences, while product owners can ensure that all the app’s digital touchpoints allow seamless interactions, without limitations.

This app addresses a pressing need with 1 in 5 Australians currently experiencing some form of disability, including more than 357,000 individuals experiencing low vision – a figure set to rise to 564,000 in the next decade*. This initiative is designed to further UBank’s mission to improve the lives of all Australians and ensure no one is left behind when it comes to financial empowerment.

“Developing a mobile app that adheres to guidelines for Accessibility is critically important and yet the only accessibility guidance tools on the market were either locked to a specific development platform or didn’t have enough features or customisation options.”

Glen Aiton, UBank CEO

“The team saw the gap and spent time creating something we can now release as an Open Source tool, with the hope that it can benefit people around the globe as all iOS contributors can leverage it and have the chance to improve the accessibility of their applications.”

“In making UBank’s Accessibility Kit publicly available, we want to ensure technology fulfils its purpose – to connect people and make everyone’s lives better,” Aiton concluded.

Making Accessibility, Accessible

Originally built as an internal testing tool for an in-house team of developers, UBank’s Accessibility Kit has now been released to the wider community as Open Source Software via GitHub – a global platform that’s home to over 40 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software.

UBank’s readily available Accessibility Kit requires no further customisation for basic use and allows iOS developers to audit accessibility features on their own apps. This allows app contributors to audit their own iOS apps directly on their devices, without requiring a connected development environment.

Available to use, download and amend for free, the Accessibility Kit checks and displays warning for various accessibility issues, which includes adjusting text types, colour contrast, custom colours, background and foreground colours, brand colours, minimum and maximum sizing, showing touch points on screen, and much more.

UBank’s Accessibility Kit is currently available on GitHub and can be accessed here:
